DESCRIPTION | This study-unit an 'Introduction to Periodontology' will provide students with the foundations on which they will be able to build their knowledge and skills over the next three years. The unit is divided into two main areas: Basic science; covering the anatomy and function of the periodontium, formation of plaque and calculus and the basic aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases and basic clinical knowledge & theory; covering clinical diagnostics and the initial management of periodontal diseases. Study-unit Aims: Introduction to Periodontology aims to provide the students with: 1. An understanding of basic sciences in relation to periodontology to expand and build on in subsequent years. 2. An understanding of periodontal epidemiology. 3. A foundation of clinical knowledge and theory on which to expand and build on in subsequent years. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Basic Sciences: - Discuss the diverse anatomic and microscopic features of the periodontium and the interrelated functional aspects. - Discuss the physiology of saliva and crevicular fluid. - Explain the protective role of the gingiva and the biology of the cementum, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament in oral physiology and regeneration. - Explain the composition of plaque and the chemical and microbial structure. - Explain the role of plaque accumulation and other local factors in the aetiology of periodontal diseases. - Discuss the role of bacteria and the host in the pathogenesis of periodontal tissue destruction. - Describe the classification of periodontal diseases. - Identify the clinical features and diagnosis of gingivitis and periodontitis. - Describe and compare both normal and pathological signs of periodontal tissues. - Describe the epidemiological tools to assess periodontal conditions. - Discuss the incidence and prevalence of periodontal diseases in their community and in the world. Basic Clinical knowledge and theory: - Discuss how periodontal probing techniques are used for detecting changes in periodontal tissues. - Discuss oral hygiene, scaling and root surface debridement techniques (both with hand and power scaling instruments). - Explain behavioral science techniques to change patients health behavior in the context of self performed plaque control. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify clinically normal anatomic features of the periodontium, saliva and crevicular fluid. - Identify clinically plaque. - Explain to patients the role of plaque accumulation and other local factors in the aetiology of periodontal diseases. - Explain the features and diagnosis of gingivitis and various forms of periodontitis. - Apply epidemiological tools available. - Assess periodontal conditions. - Use different periodontal probing techniques to detect changes in periodontal tissues. - Provide scaling and root surface debridement with hand and power scaling instruments. - Apply behavioral science techniques to change patients health behavior in the context of self performed plaque control.
