DESCRIPTION | This study-unit covers the teaching and clinical sessions in oral medicine, surgery, pathology and radiology. It consists of formal lectures, tutorials and sessions with patients in the clinical setting. Independent study time is also factored in. There are also phantom head sessions in oral surgery for minor oral surgery techniques and suturing. Students will be expected to keep a logbook of procedures and visits to the pathology laboratory and Oral Surgery department. These shall include: - 10 complete medical histories, extraoral and intraoral examination and diagnostic tests (when necessary) of oral medicine patients; - 40 extractions; - 1 visit to pathology; - 2 general anesthesia sessions. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is designed to deliver further knowledge in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology. It builds on knowledge previously acquired to add to the range of clinical skills required for overall competence. Subjects taught include Salivary Gland Disorders, Occupational and Iatrogenic Disorders, Developmental Disorders of the Face and Facial Syndromes, the related Oral Radiology and Oral Surgical techniques. Knowledge of non odontogenic bone conditions. A working knowledge of all radiographic techniques including computerised tomography, sialography and magnetic resonance imaging. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe what is normal; - Discuss signs and symptoms of disease in clinical setting; - Explain radiology with respect to the orofacial region; - Explain how to manage the signs and symptoms of oral disease. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Take a history from patients; - Recognise signs and symptoms of disease; - Explain the pathology behind disease processes affecting the head and neck; - Manage these conditions in the clinical setting; - Refer the patient if and when necessary. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded. * Submission of the Clinical Report is compulsory. ** The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year. |
