DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers a short introduction on ageing for students from a Dental Background. It discusses the biological and cellular aspects of human ageing and the effects of ageing on particular systems. It then goes on to focus on the current state of knowledge on cognitive changes associated with normal ageing and dementia. This is followed by a discussion on Delirium as well as other psychological conditions that affect elderly patients. Healthy and pathological aging with a particular focus on Frailty and its effects on the Activities of Daily Living are discussed. The use of specialized scores and tools in objective assessment of elderly persons is given particular importance. The effects of the ageing on the different systems in the body is discussed with special reference to areas of interface between the closely linked specialities of Dentistry and Medicine. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: - Demonstrate that, and explain why, older persons can age differently. Those who are frail and ill require specific assessments and management that differ from younger age groups; - Employ a comprehensive analysis of complex geriatric syndromes with a special focus on frailty; - Focus on the current state of knowledge on cognitive changes associated with normal ageing and dementia; - Outline the effects of ageing on the different systems in elderly persons and on their consequences, in particular, the ability to cope with activities of daily living; - Highlight the importance of the holistic management and preservation of quality of life in elderly care. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Administer a comprehensive geriatric assessment; - Apply the Geriatric Depression scale, the Barthel scale and the Mini Mental Score examination to persons aged 60-plus; - Complete a problem list for an elderly patient; - Formulate a holistic management plan for a frail elderly person presenting for dental treatment; - Prescribe safely in the elderly; - Engage the appropriate services for an elderly client.
