DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides the student with further knowledge in oral medicine, and pathology, with particular emphasis on the older adult. The unit will provide the students with a basis for diagnosing and managing local and systemic disorders that manifest themselves in the oral cavity. It consists of formal lectures on the area and also presentations of clinical cases seen during the students' clinical experience. In addition, each student will deliver a presentation on a subject that is assigned at the beginning of the study-unit. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at providing the postgraduate student with: - Knowledge of pathological conditions of the oral mucosa and the jaws of the elderly community; - The diagnostic procedures employed to examine pathological conditions of the oral mucosa and the jaws; - Management options of these pathological conditions according to the patients' requirements. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize the main pathological conditions in the oral mucosa and the jaws of the elderly community; - Describe the management routes for mucosal lesions; - Analyze the medical background of the elderly patients. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Establish a proper differential diagnosis and conduct the necessary tests in order to obtain a proper diagnosis of a lesion or condition in the oral cavity of the elderly; - Manage the main pathological conditions in the oral mucosa and the jaws of the elderly community; - Modify the treatment plans according to the medical complications.
