DESCRIPTION | This study-unit shall introduce the students to the different disciplines of Dentistry. It will also familiarise the students with the layout and running of the University Dental Teaching Clinics and laboratories. Students will also be taught the first principles of basic dental care. By the end of this study-unit the students should be familiar with the layout and administrative procedures of the University Teaching Clinics, including the dental laboratories. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - Allow the students to gain an understanding of the Dental Disciplines and their role as part of the Dental Team and their obligation to ensure the welfare of the patient. - Familiarize the students with the Dental Clinical Environment as well as the Dental Laboratory. - Provide a sound basis for progression to the Dental Course. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the various specialist areas in Dentistry. - List the procedures followed in terms of good infection control practice. - Explain the procedures in the dental laboratory. - List the teeth present in the child and adult dentition. - Explain in basic terms the tooth development process and morphology. - List the basic principles of oral hygiene practice. - Recognize their responsibilities and practice them by maintaining respectful behavior towards all patients and staff. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the various specialist areas in Dentistry. - Discuss the clinical and dental laboratory procedures followed in the teaching clinics. - Discuss the different teeth present, basic morphology, eruptions dates and the tooth development process. - Discuss the basic principles of oral hygiene practice.
