DESCRIPTION | This study-unit shall focus on exposing students to the clinical aspect of their theoretical and scientific learning. Through attendance to clinical sessions within the Faculty Teaching Clinic and alternative sites as deemed necessary by the Faculty, the students shall observe and perform basic clinical skills, standard precautions of infection control and Health and Safety measures. The student will be helped to develop an understanding and practical competence in the use and application of procedures, instruments, materials and records. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study unit are: - To allow the students to gain an understanding of their function as part of the Dental Team and thei obligation to ensure the welfare of the patient; - To familiarise the students with the dental clinical environment, the principles of basic dental care and their responsibilities in the running of a clinic. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognise his/her duties and be able to demonstrate the practical aspects of the principles of dental assisting taught in other study-units. - Observe on the clinical floor the techniques and procedures learnt in terms of: dental assisting; communication skills; the handling and mixing of dental materials; the maintenance of equipment and the dental unit. - List the procedures followed in terms of: good infection control practice; the handling of hazardous chemicals; the avoidance of potential sources of injury. - List the various specialist areas in Dentistry and briefly describe the particular requirements necessary when assisting within each specialty. - Recognise their responsibilities and practice them by: maintaining respectful behavior towards all patients and staff; holding in strictest confidence all things heard and seen in the clinic; showing initiative while also following instructions carefully and to the best of their ability; maintain a professional manner in dress and behaviour; seeking to develop their knowledge and skills. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Recognise their role in: - surgery preparation; - infection control procedures; - provision of instruments and equipment to the dentist/student; - maintenance of instruments and equipment; - chair-side assisting including preparation of materials; - charting and recording of findings from oral examinations; - processing of dental radiographs; - effective suction of the patient's mouth during treatment; - pouring and trimming of study models; - the construction of mouthguards; - the reception of and caring for patients; - stock control and the replenishment of supplies; - appointment making and general office duties; - oral hygiene and dietary advice to the patients. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory.
