CODE DSG2500

TITLE Dental Laboratory Practice - Cast Removable Prostheses

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Faculty of Dental Surgery

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, the practical aspects related to the construction of complex cast removable prostheses will be covered.

The laboratory steps associated with the fabrication of cast removable prostheses will be practiced sequentially and will include a) the duplication techniques and preparation of working models, b) construction of wax patterns, c) spring techniques, d) the manipulation of investment materials and their respective heating cycles, e) casting techniques and finally f) the finishing off techniques of various metal alloys prior to completion of a prosthesis intended for clinical use.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to enable the student to construct metal alloy removable prostheses.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the laboratory steps in fabrication of cast removable prostheses.
- Describe the use and manipulation of investment materials.
- Describe the use of an induction casting machine.
- Describe the use of metal alloy materials.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Prepare models used in the construction of cast removable prostheses.
- Perform the laboratory steps in the fabrication of cast removable prostheses.
- Use an induction casting machine safely.
- Finish a cast removable prosthesis to a high standard.
