DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of seminars and journal clubs held over a period of one academic year, namely year 2.

The study-unit will consist of a series of lectures/seminars relevant to the subject of the student's research. These seminars will expose the students to diverse areas of research and are meant to broaden the knowledge of the subject chosen and consolidate the knowledge gained.

Students are expected to deliver presentations on the interpretation of the results of the research being conducted. Furthermore the student will have to participate in seminars by presenting topics of relevance.
Students are expected to have previously submitted an abstract describing the content of the seminar.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:

- To expose students to different areas of research in the diverse disciplines in Dentistry;
- To allow the students to conduct an independent literature review and the analysis of the results in a particular area of study under supervision, or any other assigned topic;
- To allow students to present oral presentations to an audience generally consisting of members of the faculty and students;
- To allow students to engage in evidence-based debate on their area of research or any other topic assigned to them. Student will be required to answer questions posed by the audience.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Review a research topic from contemporary literature in a systematic manner;
- Carry out a critical appraisal of the academic literature;
- Describe several techniques and know their appropriate use;
- Demonstrate in depth knowledge of the research area under investigation;
- Report outcomes of an ongoing research project or assigned topic.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform a critical review of a research paper;
- Run a research project;
- Write clear and concise research reports;
- Analyse results of an ongoing research project;
- Communicate visually the research findings in a discussion forum;
- Communicate orally the research findings in a discussion forum.
