DESCRIPTION | The study-unit in International Economics consists of two parts: 1) a course in aspects of international economics; and 2) a course in economic and commercial diplomacy. The purpose of this study-unit is to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of international economics and the salient policy issues in international competitiveness, globalisation, trade and policies that are related to International Economic issues. The second part of the study-unit addresses specific practical measures that Commercial Attachés could propose to support SMEs in their internationalisation endeavours both for trade promotion and the attraction of foreign direct investment. This study-unit also includes a visit to an international company in Malta to provide students with a practical learning experience. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - lead students into understanding the different aspects of international economics; - give students a grasp of the basic analytical tools and concepts that are involved; - help students understand the issues concerned and be able to form a sound opinion; - present students with a practical approach to current global issues and support measures; - enhance students’ knowledge to be able to assess and to take a stand; this is professionally essential in the type of careers that the students pursue. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - comprehend the principles and theories of international economics; - demonstrate an understanding of the growth economic indicators and development; - comprehend trade and economic policies of international trade; - analyse economic integration with a focus on the Mediterranean region; - analyse the current international economic environment; - understand the support measures available for international business development. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - perform basic economic tasks in an international economic environment; - understand and interpret economic graphical representations; - brief supervisors/juniors on basic international economic principles; - propose measures to support SMEs in their internationalisation efforts.
