TITLE Economic Issues and Conflict

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 3

DEPARTMENT Centre for the Study and Practice of Conflict Resolution

DESCRIPTION The aim of this study-unit is to familiarize students with the economic and financial dimensions of war and armed conflict. It starts out with a discussion of theoretical paradigms on the relationship between war and the economy (such as Mercantilism, Marxism and Liberalism),followed by a historical perspective on this relationship, both in the state-building process (in Europe) as well as in inter-state conflicts and rivalries. The study-unit then turns to the debate on so-called new wars and the relevance of economic factors and interests in shaping contemporary armed conflicts. This includes a consideration of the ‘greed vs. grievance’ debate, the economic interests and strategies which are often involved in contemporary conflicts, as well as the role of natural resources in wars. Particular attention is given to the key commodities of oil and water. The final part of the study unit focuses on measures aimed at preventing and ending resource-fuelled wars, as well as the wider regional dimensions of ‘war economies’ and the challenges which are often associated with peace-building efforts in these contexts. The study-unit will include empirical analysis of case studies in the (wider) Euro-Mediterranean region.
