DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on the European Union’s transport policy, including road and rail transport, maritime and aviation transport. The study-unit provides a historic development of the EU Transport Policy with the background context of Treaty development and Enlargement. Besides a thorough overview of the relevant acquis, case law is also discussed and its contribution to the development of the EU Transport Policy analyzed. The relevant ‘packages’ of measures are also studied in their international context.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to help students understand the European Union’s competence in this area and to appreciate the historic context of the evolution of this competence. It seeks to familiarize students with the full extent of the Acquis Communautaire dealing with this sector in the various modes highlighting the more important principles.

Furthermore, this study-unit aims to expose students to the legislative backdrop for the application or implementation of European Transport Law. The ultimate goal is to empower students to take up professional practice in the field or to undertake further advanced academic work, as well as to move into related spheres of work, including governmental or regulatory bodies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• comprehend the evolutionary process leading to the set-up of EU wide transport law in the context of gradual legislative development;
• develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of EU transport regulation regulations and policies;
• interpret the implications of EU regulations and policies on Member States’ laws and policies;
• analyze case-law of the European Court of Justice with regards to cases associated with EU transport legislation.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• utilize acquired knowledge and understanding in researching his/her dissertation;
• assume professional practice in the field of transport law;
• work in consultancy firms, as well as in governmental and regulatory bodies;
• continue to keep updated on developments in the sector.
