DESCRIPTION The unit deals with the economic analysis of industry, including applications of theory to the analysis of firms, markets and industries. The unit will also cover industrial policy and competition policy aspects relating to the EU, as well as Malta.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to more topics in the modern theory of industrial organisation, industrial economics theory and modelling. Within this unit, competition policy is also examined, including regulating restrictive agreements, mergers, monopolies and anti-competitive practices, together with public undertakings and the control of state intervention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- formulate, model and analyse issues in industrial organisation and competition policy.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- undertake relevant analysis of companies’ strategies with regard to industrial economic theory;
- demonstrate an understanding of regulatory economic models as well as their analysis framework;
- demonstrate an understanding of competition law, its sources as well as the doctrine;
- utilise economic theory (imperfect competition, games theory, industrial economics) to develop a clear reasoned argument on cases of competition to be discussed or for helping public decision-making.
