DESCRIPTION | Students following this programme need to understand their belief system and at time challenge it in order to be able to work or engage in effective emancipatory research with and not on disabled persons and persons with mental health problems. The study unit is divided into three parts which build on each other. The first part of this study unit therefore facilitates the students' discovery of their value system towards inclusion, disability, mental health issues in relation to self-determination, collaboration and teamwork and quality of life. Students will engage in experiential learning. The topics covered will include: Self awareness, Ethics, Boundaries, Managing negative emotions, Communication & feedback, Conflict management, negotiation & closure, Value clarification and decision making, Group dynamics, The fundamental nature of caring, Ethics of caring, Moral Education, Teamwork and assertiveness. The second part will focus on positive psychological concept and how these concepts are pivitol in creating an inclusive environment. The topics will include resilance, hope, future, optimisal adaptability and gratiuties The third part deals with the importance of the philosophy dimension of research when engaged within the disability field, that is the emancipatory research paradigm, Focusing on the Challenging and Goal planning and research the 'other'. Standpoint theory will be addressed. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to assist the students in: - Developing an understanding of their value system and its effect on their work; - Achieving an understanding of themselves, at least to the extent that they know that they will be able to work towards the development of self determination of their clients; - Achieving a high level of knowledge and understanding of professional ethics with good foundation principles and theoretical concepts; - Achieving a strong understanding of professional boundaries between themselves are the service users or research participants and also other significant persons and professionals; - Developing an openness to refer clients to other professionals and agencies; - Identifying those elements which inclusive practices like hope,future, optionalism, adaptability and gratuties; - Identifying moral and ethical dilemmas and learn how to openly discuss them with their clients and working team to facilitate a solution or plan of action; - Understanding and implementing the characteristics of emancipatory research and consider this type of research as an integral part of their work. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate an understanding of the value systems and their effect on the design of services and the they as individuals work in such services; - Comprehend whether the value system allows him/her to work toward their service users' development of self-determination; - Self reflect and self analyze on ethical and moral issues; - Comprehend the need for referral to other professionals/ agencies etc; - Explore the concepts of positive psychology vis a vis working in the area of disability; - Work within respectful boundaries; - Explore unconditionally and without prejudice moral and ethical issues and behaviour; - Have developed adequate knowledge on the characteristics of emancipatory behaviour; - Comprehend the ethical implications of emancipatory research. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and analyse values underpinning a service provider; - Facilitate the development of values in themselves and others which are consistent with inclusive practices; - Apply the principles of professional practice; - Debate critically ethical dilemmas and follow decisions taken; - Support his/her clients non judgmentally; - Promote and apply positive psychology concepts in the area of disability; - Support profesionals, parents, individuals with disabilities and others to develop hope, gratitute, etc.; - Be aware of their boundaries and take action when boundaries are thought to be violated; - Work within a transdisciplianry team sharing the same values; - Refer to other experts and professionals when needed; - Implement the characteristics of emancipatory research in their own research recognise and deal with ethical problems and issues related to social research; - Critically assess research papers in the field of disability and mental health problems vis a vis the involvement of the participants themselves.
