DESCRIPTION | This study-unit seeks to help students better understand the relationships between education and work. It draws on a range of educational theories as well as labour market trends in order to deepen participants’ understanding of the complex interactions between education and the economy, with special focus on employment. In a context where change of career and change of skills within careers is the profile of modern employability, students will have the opportunity to explore the major approaches in the theory of career education and guidance and how different psychological and sociological perspectives influence these approaches. Personality-based, social-learning, developmental and structural career theories will be discussed. Career education and career guidance policy and trends will also be examined in the context of labour market developments. This unit may also include fieldwork visits to employment agencies and career guidance providers, as well as career interviewing skills. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of how careers are formed and how they develop across the lifespan. Students are also introduced to career education and guidance policy and services within and outside the educational system. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explore basic concepts in the field of career choice and development; - appreciate the influence of agency and structure on career outcomes; - differentiate between the major theories of career choice and development; - recognise career development within organisations; - identify potential career development barriers, including physical, social and psychological barriers. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - through classroom discussion, identify and select assessment tools related to career guidance and their applications; - given a set of data, explore career information sources and resources that can facilitate educational and employment decisions; - assess the relevance of career interventions that can be carried out within educational institutions and work organisations; - explore major issues in career choice, including self-exploration, opportunity awareness, decision making and taking, and transition; - analyse labour market trends.
