DESCRIPTION As per the Landscape Convention, this unit introduces students to the role of landscapes as an important part of the quality of life for people everywhere, whether in urban areas or in the countryside, in degraded areas or areas of high quality, in areas recognised as being of outstanding beauty or in everyday areas.

Once students are familiar with the basic tenets of the Landscape Convention they are introduced to two other central ideas:

a) Cultural landscape used to describe a symbiosis between human activity and environment. Students are introduced to landscapes whose value is enhanced due to the religious, artistic or cultural associations of such natural element.

b) Historic environment to help students focus on artifacts with physical evidence of past human activity and that connects people with place, and with traditions, stories and memories linked to those places.

Students are then introduced to case studies and examples of good practice that promote both national and trans-frontier cooperation in protecting landscapes, as well as exemplary measures to protect, manage and plan landscapes.

Study-Unit Aims:

(a) Familiarise students with the basic principles espoused in the Council of Europe Landscape Convention;
(b) Assist students in the identification of sites of environmental, cultural, historical and communal value;
(c) Help students in the development of landscape related educational initiatives; and
