DESCRIPTION | Students explore the development of environmental education (EE) in response to efforts to prepare individuals and social groups to understand and effectively deal with environmental problems. The study unit then focuses on the evolution of environmental education into education for sustainable development (ESD) in response to the increasing worldwide concern on sustainable development. Various key documents, intergovernmental agreements and models will be critically analysed. Study-unit Aims • To familiarise students with the development and evolution of ESD principles from both a local and a global perspective. • To enable students to analyse past, present and predicted sustainability scenarios and the role ESD plays in possible adaptation and change. • To propose different strategies that promote critical thinking on sustainability issues and thus help students become agents of change. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • list, compare and contrast the principles of EE and ESD; • critically analyse the major stages in the development of EE and the evolution of ESD; • identify the respective impact of EE/ESD principles on formal, non-formal and informal sectors of education; and • critically evaluate the impact of ecological, socio-economic and political developments on EE/ESD provision on a local, regional and global level. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • critically evaluate different EE/ESD official documents and their effectiveness in changing world thought and direction; • critically analyse EE/ESD educational programmes and assess their effectiveness; • identify opportunities to achieve ESD goals by linking activities in educational institutions with the broader community; and • plan EE/ESD programmes to address different educational needs.
