DESCRIPTION | The study-unit provides an introduction to the principles of Agenda 21 and to the issues related to the formulatio of a Local Agenda 21. The genesis and evolution of Agenda 21 concepts and processes, both at a global and at a local level will be discussed. A number of Agenda 21 case studies and their evaluations will be critically analysed . Students will be asked to select a specific context (e.g. school, community) and to draw up a framework Local Agenda 21 strategy for that context. Students have to develop an implementation plan and structures that provide an evaluation of the strategy. Study-unit Aims The study-unit aims to: • put into practice the theoretical knowledge (particularly issues of active citizenry) acquired during the course; • help students learn about the principles of Local Agenda 21 and the methodologies adopted for its design and implementation; and • equip students with the skills required to systematically analyse the characteristics of a setting and to devise ways of involving its major stakeholders in designing and implementing a Local Agenda 21. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • critically analyse Agenda 21 strategies and case studies; • apply theoretical knowledge about Local Agenda 21 to different contexts; • outline the sequence of tasks required to develop a Local Agenda 21 strategy; • identify issues that might hinder the implementation of the strategy; and • compare and contrast various Local Agenda 21 strategies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • critically appraise the effectiveness of Agenda 21 principles and practice; • recognise and respond to the different Local Agenda 21 needs of different contexts; • design a framework for a Local Agenda 21 strategy that involves different stakeholders at different levels of engagement; • gather field data and critically evaluate the proposed Local Agenda 21 project; and • use different communication media to share information about the Local Agenda 21 project developed.
