DESCRIPTION | The study-unit is designed to address some of problems faced by foreign students when using English and provides support both in writing and speaking to improve their accuracy and fluency. It is recommended that students opting for the study-unit must have a B2 to C1 level of proficiency. Study-unit Aims The study-unit aims to improve the level of proficiency in English of foreign students. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - review existing basic knowledge of the structure of English; - identify and correct errors in their own writing; - work with a variety of text types; - understand the function of, and write effective, topic sentences; - distinguish between formal and informal writing strategies and styles; - adopt emphatic structures to strengthen expression of opinion; - gain awareness on rhetorical techniques that strengthen argumentation in both writing and speaking. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - edit their own writing; - use cohesive devices to link paragraphs/ideas throughout a piece of writing;; - choose e appropriate verb tense according context; - link phrases, by using connectives and relative clauses, to produce more complex sentences; - work with rhetorical devices to contribute to discussions in class; - structure thoughts into cohesive spoken presentations. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings Students will be made aware of resource material they can make use of individually to improve their grasp of the language on an ongoing basis. |
