| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit develops students' knowledge and skills in relation to reflective writing. Besides equipping students with a knowledge of the models and approaches that can be used when engaging in reflective writing, the study-unit enhances their critical thinking skills. Students practise reflective writing from the first day of class, with sessions balanced between learning key skills pertinent to different kinds of reflective writing, and getting personally targeted guidance and feedback. The study-unit develops students’ understanding of how to employ a systematic approach when engaging in reflective writing. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims are to: - develop knowledge and skills related to reflective writing; - immerse students in critical thinking; - practise reflective writing; - equip students with writing skills that can be applied to any individual area of study; - improve fluency, intelligibility and effectiveness in conveying the key elements of a message. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate familiarity with some models of reflective writing; - follow the different stages in a reflective writing model; - demonstrate an awareness of the different stages in the stairway of critical thinking; - demonstrate familiarity with the purpose of different kinds of commentary; - identify the difference between compiling effective and less effective notes for later retrieval; - balance a range of simple and complex grammar structures in effectively conveying a message; - access, identify and make use of a good range of vocabulary in order to nuance and refine their writing; - develop enough critical awareness of written language to accurately edit and rewrite their own work. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate an ability to think critically about their ideas in relation to the ideas of others; - evaluate prior experiences and knowledge; - examine their thinking processes and the reasons for how they think; - organise and structure extended arguments coherently and cohesively with a view to communicating messages, opinions and ideas effectively; - choose and practise different reflective writing models to guide their written production; - use reflective writing to interpret real-life events and practical situations; - practise in a controlled manner different kinds of commentary in their written and spoken production; - examine their own thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, values and assumptions; - evaluate prior experiences and knowledge; - effectively retrieve important information from notes compiled, and organise this into coherent writing; - critically assess their own written work in terms of accuracy and effectiveness; - edit, reorganise and format reflective writing for a targeted readership (examiners; supervisors; case-study meetings etc.) Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Bolton, G.
