TITLE The Basics of Public Speaking and Debating

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will take students through the basics of public speaking and introduce them to debating, which is the focus of ELP1102.

Beginning with an emphasis on the core public speaking skills, the unit will ensure student participation and practice in the ability to:
- Use body, voice and pitch to deliver a persuasive speech effectively;
- Use the appropriate language and register to address various audiences;
- Use structure and coherence to be clear and concise; and
- Develop and sustain arguments.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop students' skills in organising and structuring effective communication. It will increase their confidence to speak in public and enhance their ability to negotiate and pitch ideas through discussion, and to deliver a persuasive speech.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Speak more confidently and effectively in public;
- Use language in a variety of registers;
- Use the right vocabulary for presentations and a persuasive speech;
- Structure and present ideas;
- Understand the rules of valid argumentation; and
- Discuss and negotiate a variety of topics convincingly.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Control body, voice and intonation to adapt to different audiences;
- Adapt language registers to the scope of various presentation styles;
- Use various presentation structures;
- Listen effectively;
- Speak persuasively in front of an audience;
- Argue in favour and against various propositions;
- Structure speeches of different lengths;
- Present their ideas professionally.

Students will also be provided with a reading pack.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Students are encouraged to take ELP1102 in semester 2, to consolidate the skills discussed in ELP1101.

Reassessment is 100% Oral Examination.
