DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on three parts: (i) words and meaning (ii) grammar, and (iii) language in context. It introduces students to fundamental concepts of English language structure. Through practical application, illustration and relevant examples of spoken and written English, students will be introduced to underlying patterns of the language. They will be equipped with the skills necessary to describe the basic functions of the various forms dominant in the English Language.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to core concepts in grammar and language in context;
- To encourage students to adopt a practical approach in the study of English;
- To offer students an exploration of meaning relations of different sorts;
- To describe the various contexts that influence meaning change;
- To give students a better understanding of the conventions of writing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the underlying rules and patterns that govern the English language;
- describe language in terms of form and function;
- recognise and accurately produce simple, compound and complex structures in English;
- show how verbal communication could be reflected in its written representation;
- be able to produce an extended piece of writing that evidences a clear understanding of the conventions concerning the organization of texts at the macro and micro level.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- examine their own and others' language output (for English) in the light of the four main areas;
- write and edit their own work efficiently;
- explain the functions of different forms;
- produce examples which would illustrate the four main areas;
- identify different sentence types and the different clause elements in sentences;
- produce an extended text that is coherent at the macro and micro level.
