DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will provide grammatical description and clarify how grammar works and why it is relevant today. It looks at the distinction between prescriptive and descriptive grammar. It will generate a common understanding of the central concerns related to grammar learning and teaching. Study-unit Aims The study-unit aims at: - assisting students to describe grammar; - guiding students toward understanding grammar in terms of teaching-learning problems or challenges; - introducing students to different aspects of the grammar of English; - providing students with the space to explore some of the major learning problems learners have with grammar; - showing the relevance of grammar in the learning and teaching of English. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify form, meaning and function in the basic units of grammar; - describe simple/complex noun groups and post-modification; - describe simple/complex verb groups; - identify different grammatical aspects of cohesion; - clarify ideas on why certain descriptions work and others do not; - clarify concepts related to specific grammatical issues. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - practise in creating specific grammar tasks; - identify and address learners' problems with learning grammar; - decide on appropriate strategies for any given grammatical point, and for a given group of learners.
