DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to introduce psychology to students of the various disciplines catered for by the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy. To this end, it focuses on the psychology of organisations and on organisational behaviour. It adopts the standpoint of members of the management professions, working in private enterprise, consultancy organisations, regulatory authorities and State institutions, focusing on the perceptions, attitudes, behaviours and emotional intelligence encountered or expected by members of these professions. The content of the study-unit combines principles of organisational behaviour with leadership, change, dynamics at the workplace and influences from the external environment. The pedagogical approach combines elements of instruction, observation, self-reflection and group discussion of real-world situations.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit provides a conceptual and empirical foundation of psychology that is directly related to the worlds of business, government and professional life. To this end –
- it introduces students to the leading theories of behaviour in organisations;
- it enourages students to examine their own perceptions of, and attitudes towards organisations and professions; and
- it offers ample opportunities to relate theory to real life situations through case studies, simulation exercises and the invitation of guest speakers who originate from public and private organisations, as well as NGOs.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- outline stages in the development of complex organisations and corresponding stages in the development of organisational psychology
- explain, with reference to leading theories, the concept of Organisational Behaviour (OB)
- analyse and comment on organisational change
- recognise different cognitive processes (motivation, communication and decision-making) and emotions (Emotional Intelligence), and reflect on their effects on career advancement and the labour market
- comment intelligently on the value of personality, attitudes and psychometric testing
- assess the value of organisational psychology in personnel selection and performance management
- identify power dynamics in organisational behaviour (stress, conflict management, teamwork, managing and leading for high performance and efficiency
- recognise the presence and effects of social and environmental influences on organisational behaviour.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- observe and appraise patterns of behaviour in an organisation
- identify cognitive processes and Emotional Intelligence that are relevant to a real-world situation
- reflect on and propose appropriate leadership styles to enhance efficiency according to the context
- identify and appraise the influence of external forces on an organisation
- probe their own attitudes, motivations and perceptions in preparation for employment.
