DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers the fundamental sociological concepts and theories to study business and public life, through the analysis of culture and multicultralism, social, political and economic institutions, work experiences and practices, relationships, norms and attitudes.

Students need to assimilate fundamental sociological notions to better understand the social reality in which they live and work. Through this study unit, students will come to a keen awareness of the important role that beliefs, values, social norms, gender, race, different social institutions and ideologies play in decision-making, management, political and business organizations. The study unit will help them to contextualize the social and cultural settings of economic, financial and socio-political activities in which they may be engaged.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-units aims to:

- provide students with the basic concepts, theories and methods of sociological analysis related to the understanding of business and public life;
- enable the students to consider the role that social structures, like the family, education, religion, power relations, inequality and social conflicts play in the development of economic, financial and managerial activities and what impact these activities and organizations have on their personal and public life;
- present a number of opportunities (case studies, role-plays, etc.) to students to apply sociological theories and concepts to selected empirical cases.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- critically explain basic concepts and theories relative to the sociological study of business and public life;
- observe and comment knowledgeably about sociological structures and processes within organisations and societies;
- observe and analyse critically basic social, political and economic processes;
- identify formal and informal interactions within organisations, and appraise their effects on personal and organisational performance;
- analyse the inter-relationship of class, status and power relations on work legitimation and satisfaction within an organisation;
- assess the influence of environmental, social and political factors on the humanisation of work.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- integrate sociological insights into the analysis of business, entrepreneurship and governance situations;
- appraise and make recommendations about sociological capacity that is vital for driving business strategies and public policy;
- develop and nurture a social conscience which is essential to guarantee human dignity in organisations and establish a healthy and sustainable work ethic.
