DESCRIPTION | The study-unit is an introduction to research methods as well as academic writing for 1st year students. It adopts a practical yet grounded approach to both areas. The study-unit is planned to build knowledge and develop skills in a step by step manner, through the lectures as well as the ongoing tasks. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit has two broad aims. The first is to provide business students with essential writing, document management, referencing and presenting skills. The second is to introduce them to research methods, following the scientific method. Research methods - the study unit provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of research, the research process, and the main methodologies. Principles of quantitative and qualitative methods will be discussed in the context of the scientific method. Writing skills - the study unit provides a contextual understanding of academic reading and writing. It exposes students to the general rules of academic writing and reporting, covering plagiarism, referencing, and other parameters. The unit provides practical guidance and feedback on student writing with the aim of improvement. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the purpose and value of business research - Understand research ethics and plagiarism issues - Address issues of reliability and validity - Understand the role of academic writing - Understand plagiarism rules within principles of ethical research - Appreciate writing styles and the correct reading of academic text 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop valid research questions - Understand literature and synthesize the key arguments in the form of a literature review - Determine the value of the research students come across - Write in academically correct style - Present documents and other content in an academically correct way.
