DESCRIPTION This is a study-unit focused on the role of people and human capital in effective organizations. The unit aims to equip students with a command of the main principals of human resource and human capital development. It also seeks to introduce established frameworks of good practice in human resource development and training. The study-unit engages with the students on procedural,and principle-based issues related to people issues in organizations and change management.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
i. Provide managers and leaders with the necessary understanding of leadership approaches and techniques;
ii. Equip participants with the procedural and administrative skills related to people development, including recruitment, appraisal and ongoing support;
iii. Engage in a debate on people development issues in the context of the environmental uncertainties in which organizations function; and
iv. Motivate students to develop a long term interest in the subject.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Define and discuss strategic human resource management;
2. Explain the benefits and specificities of different human resource management practices in organisations from both the employee and the employers’ perspective;
3. Discuss human resource planning and forecasting techniques;
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of different human resource management practices in different contexts;
5. Illustrate the essential features of a human resource information system;
6. Analyse and evaluate significant contemporary issues in human resource management including HRM's contribution to organisational performance;
7. Apply and communicate the appropriate theoretical models in HRM discussions.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Investigate and interpret the key procedures in recruitment and selection;
- Create employee performance management and rewards systems;
- Develop a people development plan for an organisation;
- Develop a Training Needs Analysis for an organisation;
- Identify sound HR practices, processes and initiatives from outside a given organization and adapt them to an organization in context.
