DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to provide students with the key knowledge and skill set to undertake a mini project. The first part of the study-unit will take a lecture-based approach that introduces the main concepts of project management including project life phases, frameworks for project management and stakeholder management. Following this introduction, an overview of the phases of project planning will be covered encompassing: project initiation, planning, budget and resource considerations, and risk management. The second part of the study-unit will enable hands-on application of the taught element, whereby students work in small groups on selected projects, so that they gain experience in initiating, planning, costing, and implementing a mini-project.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To familiarize students with a range of tools used for environmental project management purposes;
- To enable students to be able to design, plan, and execute a project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the process through which a project is developed and implemented;
- Explain the stages involved in the development and implementation of a project.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Design, plan and implement a project;
- Undertake stakeholder meetings;
- Set milestones and identify deliverables;
- Cost a project;
- Present results to clients;
- Evaluate project successes and failures.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions (lectures, field work, seminar, laboratory sessions and any other teaching session in whatever mode) is obligatory and only students having a satisfactory attendance will be assessed in the study-unit. Students, who do not attend at least 85% of the teaching time allocated to the study-unit, will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
