DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the opportunity to conduct an independent project, under the guidance of an assigned supervisor, on a topic of particular interest to them. The project will explore a topic of either research or practical relevance in the field of Earth Systems; students will be guided as to an appropriate choice. Additional guidance to students on suitable topics will be provided through EMP2014 and in a dedicated handbook. The topic of each project will be determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on student interests and supervision possibilities. Regardless of topic, and of whether they opt for a more research or practice-oriented project, all students will be guided to:

- Scope and plan their project, clearly defining aims and objectives;
- Critically review and discuss relevant literature and professional knowledge to establish a clear academic and professional context for the work being conducted;
- Identify, critically evaluate, and implement a suitable methodology;
- Critically analyze and evaluate project results and the implications of these for professional practice;
- Present key elements of the project, through a written report and an oral or poster presentation. The main difference between research/practice-oriented projects will be in the types of results/outputs generated.
