DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the different waste streams and the various management options. It also explores important waste management options such as Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM). In the second part of the study-unit, students will critically assess contemporary approaches such as waste reduction, composting, recycling, alternative disposal systems and zero-waste initiatives. The use of local and overseas case studies will be used to evaluate the economics of waste generation and waste management. Specific challenges related to waste management in the Maltese islands will also be addressed in this study-unit, with students undertaking fieldwork at various waste management facilities on the archipelago to be able to identify and assess the various issues involved along with the initiatives being carried out.
