DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to provide students with a theoretical and conceptual framework to aid in their evaluation of methods and solutions for various real world situations related to air pollution. It will examine the theoretical and conceptual aspects related to atmosphere emissions and the resultant degradation in air quality and will explore the standard techniques that are currently used in order to measure, in situ, the levels of certain atmospheric pollutants. The students will also be introduced to various data analysis and interpretation methods, through which they will be able to assess air quality. In addition the students will be given a general introduction to the inventorying of atmospheric emissions.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Explain the basic theory and concepts related to atmospheric pollution and its impact on air quality;
- Explain the monitoring requirements that are set by European Legislation;
- Explain the principles behind the standard techniques that are used in order to measure the concentrations of a number of air pollutants;
- Introduce the students to the techniques that are used to collect air pollution data;
- Explain the techniques that are used to analyse and assess these data.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the fundamental notions of atmospheric pollution;
- Identify the fundamentals behind these monitoring techniques and how European legislation drive the air quality monitoring efforts;
- Appraise the standard methodologies for the monitoring of air pollutants understanding the strengths and limitations of these methods;
- Utilise different techniques to analyse the temporal and spatial trends in the air pollutant concentrations;
- Apply the basics of atmospheric emissions inventorying.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate proficiency in the planning of an air quality monitoring campaign keeping in mind practical constraints such as financial, logistical and technical;
- Apply the various air quality monitoring techniques and the related data analysis techniques to the solution of real world problems related to air pollution;
- Analyse and interpret air quality data;
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, advanced concepts related to gathering of in situ air quality data and its interpretation.
