DESCRIPTION The study-unit gives students the relevant knowledge and understanding related to legal, environmental and economic issues. The concepts of professionalism and the Engineering Warrant; Professional Ethics; Human Resources and Industrial Relations; Occupational Health and Safety; Sustainable Development and Environmental Management; Commercialisation of R&D; Intellectual Property, and Standards, Risk Assessment; and Financial issues are introduced and described.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of this study-unit is to provide students with the necessary background of social, legal and management issues that they might encounter in the their future careers as professional engineers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to analyse a particular set of circumstances relating to his professional work with respect to accepted norms of behaviour and to take the necessary actions; such as reporting to higher management, dealing with subordinates, deciding on personal courses of action, etc.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the right regulations and codes of practise and behaviour appropriate to given circumstances;
- assess the situation pertaining to a particular situation in the light of regulations, etc previously identified;
- decide on an appropriate course of action to address the problem so identified and assessed;
- analyse a given management problem within his competence and propose an appropriate course of action;
- carry out a risk assessment.
