| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will cover topics such as management topics that professionals working in the fields of maritime engineering and in building services need to be familiar with. Starting with ethical issues that such professionals might have to face, the study unit will also cover commercial legal issues, tendering (including adjudication of tenders), procurement and contracting. Engineers working in the above-mentioned fields are often called upon to undertake projects, therefore, the study-unit will also cover project management and the economic analysis of projects. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims are: - to expose students to ethical issues that are commonly encountered in engineering projects, be they in building services or maritime engineering, such as conflicts of interest, corruption, confidentiality and intellectual property rights; - to familiarise students with commercial legal issues such as the relationship between engineer, client and contractor, liability, company law, arbitration, etc.; - to introduce students to the principles of project management; - to show students how to correctly draft a tender and a tender offer, the pitfalls to avoid, etc.; - to introduce students to the principles of procurement and contracting; - to expose students to the various methods for carrying out an economic feasibility study. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify the ethical issues involved in a given case study; - recognise the commercial issues involved in a given situation; - outline the management steps required for the successful completion of a given project; - demonstrate the correct way of drafting a tender document, a tender offer, or a procurement contract; - analyse the economic feasibility of a given project. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - propose the correct ethical behaviour for a given case study; - recommend the appropriate reaction to a given commercial legal issue; - draw up a project management plan, including resources required, critical path analysis, delivery times and milestones for a given project; - prepare the appropriate documentation for the procurement of a given item or service, whether as a buyer or a seller; - formulate and prepare out an economic feasibility study for a given project.
