DESCRIPTION | - The Per Unit System: Revision of 3–phase systems; Definition of Per Unit System; Representation of Component Specifications in pu; Changing between different bases. - Power Transfer in Power Systems: Load Flow Problem; Balance of Powers; Synchronous Generator in Steady State Operation; Synchronous Generator Excitation systems; Performance Chart. - Transmission Lines: Overhead Lines; Corona Discharge; Insulator Types; Underground Cables; DC Cables; Equivalent Circuits. - Fault Analysis: Types of Fault; The Fault MVA Source; Symmetrical Faults; Limiting the Fault Level. - Power System Protection: Protection Relays; Overcurrent Protection; Unit Protection; Distance Protection. Study-unit Aims: This unit covers the principles of the components that make up an Electrical Power System. It deals with the p.u. method, steady-state operation of synchronous generators, transmission lines, symmetrical faults and the basics of power system protection. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the principles of operation of synchronous generators. - Understand how to use the p.u. method in power systems. - Understand and explain the power flows in transmission lines and how these are modelled (short, medium and long). - Explain and analyse symmetrical three phase faults. - Understand the basics of protection in power systems. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Perform calculations related to synchronous generators and derive their performance chart. - Perform p.u. calculations applied to power systems. - Calculate power flows in a power system. - Perform calculations related to symmetrical three phase faults in power systems. - Set the parameters of basic power system protection. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Power System Analysis, John Grainger, Jr., William Stevenson. |
