DESCRIPTION | This study-unit describes aspects of electrical technology that are primarily related to industrial applications. The following topics are studied in this unit: Applications of Electrical Drives: Selection of electric motors for industrial drives; review of special applications of electrical drives, for example, hoists, cranes and lifts, machine tools, centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, centrifugal fans and conveyers. Industrial Process Heating: High frequency and low frequency induction heating; arc-welding and resistance welding with A.C. and D.C. supplies; electric furnaces, resistance and electrode water heating; electro-plating. Plant Economics: Costs and tariffs, plant load factor, diversity factor, maximum demand, economic choice of plant, power-factor improvement, local and bulk improvement, relative applications of static capacitors and synchronous machines. Building Management Systems for Industrial and Commercial Installations. Introduction to Energy Audit Basics. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit describes aspects of electrical technology that are primarily related to industrial applications. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify electrical systems which are applicable to industrial systems to perform various processes. - Identify the steps required to implement a BMS. - Identify the steps required to conduct an Energy Audit. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design electrical systems applicable to industrial to perform various processes. - Design and implement a BMS. - Conduct an Energy Audit.
