| DESCRIPTION | The lectures will introduce the basics of energy efficient mechanical systems and then concentrate on electrical efficient technologies and their applications in domestic, commercial and industrial electrical set-ups. The study-unit will concentrate on electrical efficiency in industry, including power factor correction and energy efficiency in electrical machines The study-unit will also introduce students to control systems for optimising energy efficiency (e.g building management systems) and methods for increasing energy efficiency in conventional systems. The study-unit will first introduce both mechanical and electrical energy efficient technologies. It will then focus on electrical energy efficient technologies. Finally, the study-unit will cover energy auditing. Topics shall include: - Basics of Efficiency in Mechanical Systems - Electrical Energy Efficiency and Management in Buildings - Energy Efficient lighting and its control - Electrical Motors and Drives for industrial processes - Power Factor Correction - Power Quality - Concept of Smart Energy Networks for Energy Monitoring and Control - Efficiency in domestic equipment. Study-unit Aims: The objectives of this study-unit is to expose students to the efficiencies of the various energy conversion and energy using equipment. The study-unit aims to impart to students knowledge regarding the efficiency of various energy conversion and energy using equipment and to teach them how to carry out simple efficiency calculations as well as identifying areas where energy efficiency improvements can be affected. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe the factors that affect the energy efficiency of a given energy consuming machine or system, including electrical generation systems and drives, - understand how to improve the energy efficiency of a given electrical machine or system, - list methods by which the energy efficiency of an electrical energy system can be increased, - identify ways and means of improving the efficiency of a given electrical system providing energy related services, such as power, heat and light. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - distinguish between different energy efficient lighting technologies, - design a power factor correction for an industrial application, - calculate the energy efficiency of a given electrical machine or system, - construct a simple control system for controlling the energy consumption of a given mechanical system in order to reduce its energy consumption, - implement ways and means of improving the efficiency of a given electrical system (in applications of : power, heat and light), -undertake an energy audit.
