DESCRIPTION | This study-unit enables students to develop the knowledge, skills and values aligned with sustainable development and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). Lectures and interactive sessions will enable students to critically review various aspects of sustainable development and how these can relate to teaching and learning in the primary classroom. This will be followed by interactive sessions where students learn how to create child-centred and place-based learning resources for the primary classroom in such a way that primary school children are guided to become agents of change for sustainable development. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to focus on equip student teachers with a holistic understanding of sustainable development and ESD. The focus will be on the education and development of student teachers able to implement ESD across the curriculum, via hands-on experiences in a primary school context. Student teachers will acquire and practice skills to be able to equip children with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to become change agents. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the principles of sustainable development (environmental, social, cultural, economic and political); - Become aware of the impact of human behaviour on the ecosystem; - Assess the educational needs of children and create an ESD programme across the curriculum to meet the needs of children; - Create and evaluate teaching and learning resources for the primary classroom based on the principles of ESD; - Explore and evaluate local and international education programmes and initiatives related to ESD. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop and implement a variety of teaching methods, values and attitudes that align with a sustainable lifestyle; - Develop critical and analytical thinking skills; - Critically analyse the alignment of educational programmes with the principles of ESD; - Articulate their own thoughts in writing and via presentations; - Relate theoretical insights with their practical knowledge; - Use research to reflect upon policies and practices.
