DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on teaching as an art and a science. It emphasises a socio-cultural and the sciences of education approach to teaching and learning. After going through the different pedagogical approaches, techniques and innovations adopted over the past two millennia, student-teachers will investigate how recent research informs pedagogy and the development of pedagogical decisions. It intends to equip students with the knowledge and skills to facilitate meaningful learning in children. It introduces student teachers to basic matters including inclusive and evidence-based teaching strategies, classroom management techniques, practical and creative resources, social and emotional issues and self-reflection.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit intends to introduce students to the discipline of instructional design and to the broader concept to sciences of education while providing them with knowledge and skills of how to meet individual requirements in the classroom through a variety of strategies, resources and technologies. Students will develop a repertoire of strategies based in situated and distributed evidence-based learning approaches.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify key contributions of educationalists over the past two and a half millennia;
- define pedagogy;
- discuss and identify how the theories of situated learning, distributed cognition, Aptitude x Treatment x Interactive teaching and/or Adaptive Education can be applied when developing individual lessons and schemes of work;
- discuss how research in the fields of cognitive architecture, memory, emotional regulation, self regulation and prior knowledge informs planning of learning activities;
- outline various forms of assessment that may be used in class.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- research and apply the different theoretical knowledge obtained from the sciences of education when adopting teaching strategies;
