Performance analysis and design. Effects of multi-stage circuits on performance. Op-amp frequency response and modelling. 2) Feedback: Use of classical control theory for the analysis of the different types of amplifiers. Effects of non-ideal characteristics on system performance with single stage transistor amplifier circuits. Effects of multiple stages on stability. Op-amp circuit stability considerations. 3) Resonance and Sinusoidal oscillation: LC and LCR resonant circuits. Q-Factor and Bandwidth. Piezoelectric crystals. 4) Sinusoidal oscillators: The Barkhaussen criterion, Oscillation, Designing for exact marginal stability. Different topologies of Oscillators – LC and RC oscillators such as Colpitts, Hartley, Phase-Shift, Wien-Bridge. Laboratory work: 1) Design and test the frequency response of a single stage amplifier circuits. 2) Assessment of feedback effects on single stage transistor and op-amp circuits. 3) Design, simulate, build and test various types of sinusoidal oscillators. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - address frequency response considerations in the analysis and design of transistor amplifier circuits and operational amplifier circuit design; - address feedback using classical control theory applied to electronic circuit theory and presents the effects of non-ideal conditions on performance; - describe the conditions governing oscillation and explain the operation of various sinusoidal oscillator circuit topologies; - provide an introduction to active filters. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and design transistor amplifier circuits with defined frequency performance characteristics; - Consider the performance limitations of the operational amplifier in circuit design; - Describe the four basic feedback techniques used in electronic circuits and use feedback techniques to design and analyse electronic circuits; - Explain and analyse op-amp the effect of op-amp limitations on circuit performance; - Analyse and design oscillator and filter circuits. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Build and test transistor amplifier circuits with considerations to frequency response, feedback and stability; - Build and test sinusoidal oscillator circuits. - Build and test a basic active filter circuit.
