The seminars focus on the theoretical literature on the major challenges in world politics selected for discussion and the EU response to them.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims and objectives of the study-unit are to engage the participants in a discussion and analysis of salient international relations issues which the EU confronts. The discussion focuses on the key institutional structures and decision-making processes established by the Treaties of the European Union, the main EU external policies such as Enlargement, Human Rights, Development and Trade as well as other issues which crop up from time to time. Policies which overlap with other study-units will be left out of the discussion.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course the student will have familiarized themselves with the decision-making process in the external relations domain of the EU to the extent that they can also apply their knowledge to understand issues which are not covered in this study-unit.

They will better understand the EU’s interests in global politics, its methods and the difficulties associated with their pursuit such as discord between the member states and the difficulties in achieving consensus when national interests differ. Attention is also given to the cleavage between the pursuits of interests and the promotion of values such as human rights in the EU’s external relations.
