TITLE Placements in European Studies

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT European Studies

DESCRIPTION The study-unit starts by introducing to the student the concept of placement, and by highlighting what is expected from each participant in terms of efforts and outcomes.

Students are then assigned a place of work where they have to carry out 140 hours of placement, equivalent to ten (10) hours per week for the 14 weeks of the regular academic semester. The total of 140 hours can be divided into two (5 hour) sessions of work per week, or one session of 6 hours and another of 4 hours of work per week, for example, according to the needs of both students and entities hosting the placement.

The entities offering the placements will have to sign an agreement with the Institute for European Studies, called the ‘Placement Agreement’. The schedule of the placements shall not overlap with the students' academic timetable. The placement has to be conducted in Malta, unless specifically stated.

A mentor from the entity hosting the placement is to be appointed for each student. The role of the mentor is to assist the student to develop and enhance practical knowledge in the area of European studies. A member of the academic staff of the Institute for European Studies shall also be appointed, in order to follow both practical and academic aspects of the placements.

The students shall be assigned specific tasks by the entity hosting the placement. These tasks shall be included in Annex I Placement Training Plan of the University of Malta Placement Scheme Agreement Postgraduate, and reviewed and approved by the academic staff at the Institute for European Studies. The tasks assigned to each student have to be completed by the end of the placement period, unless specifically stated by the entity hosting the placements.

At the end of the placement, the students shall prepare an essay where they provide a detailed overview of the tasks carried out, describe and self-reflect on this learning experience.

The number of places available for the placements will be announced every year and there might not be enough for all students applying for them. Applicants will be selected according to a set of selection criteria, including their academic performance.
