| DESCRIPTION | The economic component of the study-unit gives an in-depth understanding of economic causes and effects of European integration. First, the topic is introduced with reference to the history of European economic integration. Second, economic and political-economy aspects of preferential trade liberalization and customs union formation are identified and discussed from a European perspective. Third, economic implications of factor market integration are identified with particular focus placed on the functioning of the Single market. Fourth, the optimal currency area and other analytical aspects of monetary integration are studied. In the political component of the study-unit, we study theories of European integration which are essential for a better understanding the EU. This includes the main theories and political paradigms involved, such as federalism/federation, functionalism and neo-functionalism, inter-governmentalism and Liberal inter-governmentalism, multi-level polity and the new institutionalism. Study-Unit Aims: Main Economic and Political theories, concepts and applications to European Integration are placed in focus, including Economic approaches relevant to analyze preferential trade agreements, factor mobility and monetary integration and Political approaches on federalism, functionalism and inter-governmentalism. The study-unit serves as an essential basis or companion to other study-units followed in the course. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe main economic and political analytical approaches to European Integration; - Identify the main assumptions, mechanisms and effects of European Integration using these approaches; - Understanding research techniques used to identify effects of European Integration. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate the relevance of analytical approaches that have shaped European Integration; - Analyze economic, political and political-economy aspects of European integration; - Connect the analytical approaches from a more holistic (economic-political) angle.
