DESCRIPTION | This study-unit intends to offer the pastoral and theological vision of the Second Vatican Council. This unit will give students an opportunity to reflect upon the Council’s importance and to consider how one can view the Council in fifty years hence. It will focus on the context of Vatican II, the event as an episode in a larger story, the revolutionary consequences of the council as well as on the main themes of the 16 documents. Students will assess the main perspectives of the Council, its implementation and its reception. Study-Unit Aims: - To identify and highlight Vatican Council II's central inspirations, fundamental concerns and theological insights: - To assist students in understanding the implications of Vatican II's renewed reflection of the Church and its engagement with the world; - To evaluate its reception by Catholics and others in the light of the twenty-first century challenges and pastoral realities. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Acquire a deeper understanding of the context of Vatican II and its effects on the Church and on society; - Appreciate what lies behind the 16 documents of the Council and their relevance, if any, to ecclesial life. 2.
