DESCRIPTION | The study-unit studies the mystery of the Incarnate Word and delves into the earthly mission of Jesus which culminates in his saving death and resurrection. It first focuses upon certain general christological and mariological issues. The first part of the study-unit treats the origins and the public mission of Jesus - his teaching, miracles and way of life - and his mother's role in this. The study-unit then delves into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus, namely his passion, death and resurrection, and Mary's involvement. The final section of the study-unit deals with the identity of Jesus and the christological titles, namely Son of God, Son of Man, Mediator and High Priest, the chrostological controversies and the Marian dogmas. Study-Unit Aims: - To enable students to have a sound formation on the central aspects of Christology and Mariology. - To provide students with the opportunity to see the link binding Christology and Mariology to other units in theology. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will: - Be conversant on the main aspects of the public mission of Jesus, namely, his teaching on the Kingdom of God, his miracles, his table-fellowship and relationship with members of his society; - Be knowledgeable about the Paschal Mystery of Jesus, namely, his suffering, death and resurrection on the basis of biblical data and theological writings from all ages; - Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Virgin Mary in her Son's saving mission. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify specific moments in the life and mission of Jesus and evaluate their all-embracing relevance to salvation history and to theological reflection; - Distinguish between the various theological titles; - Talk about the major christological controversies between the third and seventh centuries, and explain how the Church responded; - Talk about the specific role of the Virgin Mary, and to connect this with her Immaculate Conception, Virginal Maternity, and Assumption into heaven.
