DESCRIPTION | The study-unit seeks to give a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge on the contexts in which the mission of the Church unfolds. It is divided into two parts. The first part of the study-unit will study the evolution of the mission of the Church throughout the ages as well as present a theology of mission. Inculturation is a central theme in evangelization. Contemporary issues in the mission of the Church are analysed. The second part will focus on the relationship between faith and culture. This will be done from both a theological as well as an anthropological point of view. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at appreciating the missionary nature of the Church and to instil in students the missionary attitude which the Church sees as priority in her pastoral activity. This study-unit provides the student with a strong foundation on missiology and evangelization. The history of mission together with pastoral attitudes which help the Church become more missionary will be studied. Moreover, the relationship between faith and culture and their necessity for evangelization will be studied. Various contemporary issues and challenges shall be analysed and discussed. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. assess and evaluate society and its challenges as they exist today; 2. engage with the world in which people live in order to be able to accompany persons; 3. analyse cultural trends; 4. prioritise the cultural component in every pastoral plan. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. defend an ecclesial and wordly perspective which includes all cultures and differences and is against some sort of ghettoization; 2. assess culture and the contribution it can give to the Church and vice-versa; 3. value the way the Church reaches out to different contexts in society; 4. examine new forms of culture and the way the Church can evangelize them.
