DESCRIPTION This study-unit has two main objectives: intensive training in the French language and in French culture, as well as the discovery of the social reality to which this language applies. On arrival, students take a test in French language in order to determine their level. Since students are beginners or have limited knowledge of French, priority is given to oral and written comprehension and oral and written production. During the second semester the objectives of the first semester will be pursued and reinforced.

The main text and the communicative practice during the course will enable the students to understand basics of French grammar, to make use of important phrases in French which are relevant to diplomatic communication, and to become acquainted with important political, economic, social and cultural aspects related to France and to Francophonie.

Study-Unit Aims:

- enable students of diplomacy to gain basic skills in the French language;
- familiarise students with French culture and Francophonie, as well as aspects of modern day French society;
- familiarise students with vocabulary and texts pertaining specifically to diplomatic parlance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand and apply basic skills in the French language;
- understand and apply specific language pertaining to diplomacy;
- gain insight into French culture and society.
2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- communicate orally and in writing in the French language in general, and specifically in terminology used in diplomatic parlance.

- Handouts, based on the notional and functional approach and mainly in dialogue form, are given to students according to their level.
