DESCRIPTION | This study-unit assumes that an A1 level in French has been acquired, and while consolidating the skills, vocabulary and grammar acquired at that stage, it proceeds to develop the 4 linguistic skills at A2.1 level, as specified by the Common European Framework of Reference. It exposes students to a variety of level-appropriate oral conversations and written texts thus addressing the skills of reading comprehension, oral comprehension. It also trains students to respond appropriately in practical situations by using relevant speech acts in role-plays and to write letters and respond to emails and messages in clear and correct French. This study-unit also addresses the cultural dimension of language, while increasing students' lexicon and range of structures with which to express themselves. Themes and situations tackled include feasts and rituals, telephone conversations, social media, seasons, eating out, clothing, travelling etc. Study-unit Aims: - To improve students' speaking skills at A2.1 level by training them in a range of communicative scenarios through speech acts. - To improve students' listening skills by exposing them to at A2.1 level dialogues. - To improve students' writing skills at A2.1 level by training them in grammar, vocabulary and written layout for basic correspondence. - To improve students' reading skills by exposing them to a range of at A2.1 level texts. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Use a greater variety of verbs and tenses in a communicative context to refer to present, past and future events (passé composé, futur simple). - Use vocabulary and expressions related to telephone conversations, social media, seasons, eating out, clothing, travelling etc. - Speak about French feasts, symbols, cuisine, Francophone countries. - Discuss French everyday customs and social norms. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Take part in a routine conversation on simple predictable topics. - Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). - Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. - Describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. - Write short letters relating to matters of immediate need.
