TITLE Poésie et société/Poetry and Society

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT French

DESCRIPTION "Poésie et société" comprises two sections one of which deals with "essais" or intellectual texts. Poets and novelists too reflect on society: they analyze the contemporary status quo of the nation or produce an x-ray of postmodern society. Other works also offer major contributions to the theory of theatre, photography or digital art.

The other section of this study-unit of studies includes a selection of 20th century French poetry. Poets got involved in what has been described as a tussle between two modes: “order” against “adventure”. The first mode exerts its influence, for example, in the still vigorous epic inspiration. The second shows itself in a recent form of poetry writing: the prose poem.

Study-Unit Aims:

The components of this study-unit consist of an introduction to students in the French program of intellectual writing and 20th century poetry. Students will discover that authors, besides indulging in creative writing, also make forays in the social sciences. The "essais" imply that literature derives meaning from a socio-political context both on a national scale and even on a world level. Other texts are meant to show that oftentimes authors take a deep interest in other arts, like, painting and digital media. These other arts complement creative writing or compete with it.

This study-unit confirms the specificity of poetry so much so that the style of modern poetry is diametrically opposed let's say to journalistic prose. Students will discover the work of poets who are included in anthologies of French 20th century poetry. They will reflect on the classical Greek concept of "muthos" underscoring the similarity between poetry, dream and myth.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

Student will advance in two interesting fields of French studies. He will discover French authors who besides creating literary fiction produce as well intellectual writings. The student will identify with the artist (rather than with the social scientist) who exercises the faculty of thinking. Ensues a realisation of how fiction literature breaks out into the social sciences. With regards to the poetical field, students will realize that a poem may be interpreted by readers in different manners.

2. Skills:

The intellectual writings or “essais” in the French program will help students improve their literature research. Students will be able to carry out a formal analysis of a poem by referring to anthropological or linguistic notions. They will now apply a social science to the critique of poetry or fiction writing. They will also appraise a different art, for example, photography along with poetry. In this manner students of the French program will integrate with others from other departments, exchange different view points and enrich academic debate.
