DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers students the opportunity to examine the concept of well being as it relates to children, young people and families.Bronfenbrenner (1979)’s model of ecological model of human development will be used as a conceptual framework. In this sense, the study unit will take into account the global changes in marriage, parenting and family life that have taken place in this last decades and how these changes and the rate that these changes are happening are impacting adult’s and children’s well-being. Other contextual factors such as poverty and its impact on children's development will be discussed. Emphasis will be made on the perspectives of children and young people themselves on their own well-being. Mention will also be made of recent developments in neuroscience, particularly on the new information about the complex interaction between an individual’s biological make up and his or her social environment and how families impact human development.
