DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to laboratory practices and safety aspects related to the laboratory environment.
This practical study-unit will give the student exposure to theoretical issues about Food Safety and Environmental Health.
This unit incorporates theoretical and laboratory practicals and will help the students familiarise themselves with skills which are relevant to the area of Food Science.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to familiarise students with the principles of Good Laboratory Practice, Safety measures (chemical safety, health and safety), Waste disposal and Risk Assessment while working in a laboratory setting. This study-unit will also enable students to perform basic analytical tasks related to Food Science.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Review the basic good laboratory practices (GLP);
- Outline the Health and Safety management systems, applicable while working in a laboratory;
- Review the basic methods of analysis of foods;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the basic methodologies and tools used in food analysis;
- List the strengths and limitations of each method of analysis.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform sample preparation for analysis;
- Demonstrate competence in fundamental food analysis;
- Operate basic laboratory devices and equipment relevant to the testing;
- Interpret experimental data and results from the analytical tasks.
