DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will highlight the main societal and economic issues that affect the food supply/demand chain. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit will highlight: - The main societal issues that affect the food supply/demand chain and the identify the measures in food policy and strategy that can be used to address such issues; - Justification for issues raised and practice common in the food industry (farm to fork) will be characterized, discussed and analyzed; - The development of codes of practice for food professionals to promote professional integrity will be discussed; - To enable participants to learn from each other by creating an online learning community; - To facilitate collaborative learning in a scaffolded approach. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify societal issues (such as food deserts, food insecurity and sovereignty); - Identify issues associated with industrial practices including the waste and byproducts of production; and - Analyse issues (above) and provide/propose mitigation processes to promote fair, safe and therefore ethical foods; - Set up a personal blog to showcase one's ideas and work [already set up for other study-units; - Present personal opinions in an online blog. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Argue for equity regarding the availability and affordability of safe and wholesome food for the general public and its effect on quality of life; and - Propose strategies and a code of conduct for food professionals.
